For healthy bones! Contains highly available biofermentatively produced vitamin K2.
Vitamin K2: importance and sources
Vitamin K2 (also known as menaquinone) is an essential, fat-soluble vitamin[loggedin]which in a healthy body is about half formed by bacteria in the intestine or absorbed through food [/loggedin]. The best sources of vitamin K2 are cheese made from raw milk from grass-fed cows, fermented plant foods such as sauerkraut or natto (fermented soya from Japan).
For healthy bones
Vitamin K2 or vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and normal blood clotting.

Interaction of vitamin K2 and vitamin D3
Vitamin K2 should be taken with vitamin D3, as the two substances work together[loggedin] and together promote bone formation. There is scientific evidence that calcium can only fulfil its qualities for maintaining normal bones to a limited extent without a sufficiently high level of vitamin K2 [/loggedin].
Who is vitamin K2 important for?
Supplementation with vitamin K2 is particularly important for
- People whose eating habits rarely include green vegetables
- People for whom the good condition of their bones is an important criterion
- Older people should pay more attention to an adequate supply of vitamin K (vitamin K2 production decreases with increasing age)

Different forms of vitamin K2
Vitamin K2 exists in different variants, which differ either in the length of their side chain (MK4, MK7 and MK9) or with regard to their spatial arrangement (cis or trans variant).
Forms of vitamin K2 at a glance
Form | Description |
---|---|
Vitamin K2 MK4 | Insufficient to poor bioavailability |
Vitamin K2 MK7 cis | Practically ineffective (less than 2% efficiency) |
Vitamin K2 MK7 trans | Very effective, very good bioavailability |
Vitamin K2 MK9 | Not authorised in Europe – Still under investigation |
Bioavailability of cis and trans
The cis form of vitamin K2 is considered biologically inactive. Depending on the manufacturing process, undesirable cis-isomers can form and the product can no longer be labelled as all-trans*. Chemical solvents are often used in the preparation of K2 vitamins, some of which may remain in the product. Vitamin K2 is only maximally bioavailable if 99% of it is present in the trans variant (all-trans).
