Folic acid is a yellowish to orange-colored, crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water.

Folic acid is a coenzyme involved in the transfer of C1 molecule building blocks in central metabolic reactions. It plays an important role in the synthesis of purines, pyrimidines, nucleic acids and the metabolism of amino acids. Increased homocysteine levels are associated with various diseases.

Indications and fields of application

For the treatment of megaloblastic anemia caused by folic acid deficiency. As part of a low-dose methotrexate therapy, see under methotrexate syringe.

contraindications

In the case of pernicious anaemia, folic acid alone must not be used. It must be given together with vitamin B12.
